Basic Tree Climbing Course |
Safe independent climbing for
yourself. The Basic Course is scheduled by appointment. |
This course teaches the skills and techniques
needed to climb safely. The Basic Tree Climbing Course lasts 18
hours, spread over three days. It begins with a two-hour introductory fun
climb on day one, from 6-8 p.m.
This is an intensive course. You need to come rested. Be aware that as you leave the course, you will be tired. The climbing technique taught in this class is often referred to as a self-belay friction knot climb. It's also known as the "double rope technique" (DRT.) The self-belay friction knot allows you to do three important things. It allows you to move up the rope, also move down the rope. And when you let go, it automatically locks in place so you can relax and take in the view. This is a neat climbing system. You will also learn about tree selection, climbing gear, equipment care, and tree protection. See the Safety page for more details. The main thing is that after completing this course, you'll be able to select and climb trees safely by yourself. Quotation from a student:
"This class is
one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I have experienced
deep lessons in faith, trust, and fear; and gained an activity that I
can do anywhere, at anytime, staying in touch with the outdoors."
This is a standard course, which Genevieve Summers helped Tree Climbers International to develop. Completing the course requires that you pass both a written test and a physical demonstration of your abilities. This is to ensure your tree
climbing competence and safety. Note that this basic tree
climbing course teaches you to climb safely, yourself. It is not enough
preparation for leading other people in climbs. For that, you need the Tree Climbing
Facilitator Training Course.
Age Requirements: Usually the Basic Tree Climbing Course is reserved for participants at least 18 years old. Participants aged 16 or 17 must have signed parental permission and a phone interview. Occasionally a young participant age 13 to 15 is accepted into the course when accompanied by a responsible adult. Certificates are issued only to course graduates who are 18 or older.
